"Write out your last month in the gym, write down your month with Sam, compare the two. I can't imagine theres anyone who wouldn't learn from this guy, and if you're putting all these hours into the gym or your sport you may as well do it right, for now and for the future"
Read moreWHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A FRIEND, ABOUT TRAINING WITH SAM?
I would find it hard going back to the gym afterwards. Sam sets this rhythm to your training, for me it was 3 weeks of work and a de-load week, with a weekly check in that he uses to adjust the coming week. In the calls I have with him he's big on checking in on the physical and emotional side so you kind of get a life coach built in. It's great for me because I have a habit of overtraining, a stressful job and a busy sporting life travelling to play in the Spanish National volleyball tour, so I needed a coach who can understand my workouts and needs with context. Sam is the only person I've found who can manage this and the improvements I've seen have been immense, particularly in my squat and power clean.
WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT TRAINING WITH SAM?
Firstly how well the virtual sessions went. I really didn't think they'd go as smoothly as they did, but once the camera was set up it was really effective. Everything was managed in the app as well so I pretty much had a coach with me at all times. Secondly I was surprised by how intuitive Sam was. When you get a trainer you expect someone who motivates you to go all out for an hour so you can't work. Although we have done those kind of sessions when it fit the program, for the most part Sam is looking at sustainable gains, mobility, technique, and how to make me a better athlete. Most importantly, he gets that for someone in a high pressure corporate job, theres a life happening outside of the gym, and programming, volume, surveys on mental health and questions about life outside of the gym all help to make this work in the long run.
WHAT BENEFITS HAVE YOU REALISED, PHYSICALLY OR MENTALLY, FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SAM?
Looking at one rep max I'm up 7.5kgs on bench press, 15kgs on power clean, 20 kgs on deadlift and 10kgs on squat over 3 training cycles. theres a load more stats in the trainerize application on other things like my body weight and size but I'm more interested in performance.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS TO TELL SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING WORKING WITH SAM?
Write out your last month in the gym, write down your month with Sam, compare the two. I can't imagine theres anyone who wouldn't learn from this guy, and if you're putting all these hours into the gym or your sport you may as well do it right, for now and for the future.
